Andy Murray will not play singles at his final Wimbledon

MADRID, 2 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Scottish tennis player Andy Murray, two-time Wimbledon champion, announced on Tuesday through his communications agency that he will not compete in the singles draw of the third ‘Grand Slam’ of the season in his farewell year, after not recovering in time from the back injury he suffered two weeks ago at the Queen’s tournament.

The statement released by his communications agency regretted that the player has “worked incredibly hard on his recovery” but that he will not be able to play his match against the Czech Tomas Machac on Tuesday. However, he will play the doubles alongside his brother Jamie Murray, in his last time in a tournament in which he made history by becoming the first British player to win it in 2013 after 77 years of drought, since 1936.

The former world number one and two-time Olympic champion has been dealing with physical problems since 2018, when he underwent his first hip surgery. Then, a year later, he had to go back under the knife, not only thinking about his return to the courts but also about gaining quality of life.

In June 2019, he returned to competition with a hip prosthesis that will last him a lifetime, and with which he was no longer able to return to his pre-injury performances. In 2024, his best result was the third round at the Miami Masters 1000, where he was eliminated by Machac, who was going to be his rival this Tuesday. He has also been eliminated in his debut in the two Grand Slams he has played, against Etcheverry and Wawrinka.

For the moment, she has not confirmed whether she will play more tournaments before retiring at the end of this year, but she will not be able to have her dream farewell on the grass where she became a legend by winning her two Wimbledon titles there, as well as the Olympic gold in London 2012.
