The Ankoay ladies 3×3 dominated the 2024 Reunion Runball basketball tournament.
Madagascar has once again shown its expertise in 3×3 basketball. The Ankoay women were crowned champions while the men are vice-champions of Runball 2024.
The “Runball 2024” basketball tournament, eighth edition, ended yesterday in Reunion with the Ankoay ladies winning the champion title. The Ankoay men, for their part, won the title of vice-champions, after a 17-21 defeat against the French national team. The latter took revenge after the defeat at the World Cup in Austria in 2023 and is now preparing for the Paris Olympics in less than a month.
For the ladies, the Ankoay national team, composed of Sydonie Marie Erica Andriamihajanirina, Muriel Harisoa Hajanirina, Christiane Minaoharisoa Jaofera, and Rondro Emeranchine Raherimanana, flew over the competition with remarkable mastery, dominating all their opponents in turn.
In the final against the Kreopolitaines, a selection of players for this “Runball 2024”, the Malagasy basketball players won with a score of 21-12.
From the start of the group stages, the Malagasy players displayed their technical superiority, making their final victory predictable. In the first match of the group stage, Madagascar dominated South Africa with a score of 22-11, before winning against the Kreopolitaines in the second match, with a score of 21-8.
In the semi-final, the Ankoay ladies won without much difficulty against Réunion 2 with a score of 22-9. The final match was only a replica of match 2 of the group stage against the Kreopolitaines. Madagascar dominated the Kreopolitaines for the second time by winning with a score of 21-12.
Christiane Minaoharisoa Jaofera, a member of the Ankoay national team, said: “The Ankoay women have demonstrated technical superiority throughout the tournament. The return of Rondro Emeranchine Raherimanana to the national team has brought great serenity to the team, and it is thanks to her that we won the tournament. We have more experience than the other participating countries, even South Africa lacked experience in 3×3 for the women.”
Men’s vice-champions
In the men’s competition, the French national team, which will participate in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, won the Runball 2024 championship title. Aware of Madagascar’s potential in 3×3 and driven by a spirit of revenge after the 2023 World Cup, the French basketball team held its own by winning with a score of 21-17.
Having played without complexes against the French, the team composed of Elly Randriamampionona, Livio Ratianarivo, Arnol Alpha Solondrainy and Fiary Jonhson Rakotonirina posed many problems to their opponents. The Malagasy held on until the last second of the match.
In the group stage, Madagascar won all its matches in regulation time. Madagascar beat Guyana by 21-10 before outclassing Réunion 1 with a score of 21-16. In the quarter-finals, Madagascar beat South Africa with a score of 22-13 before outclassing Reunion 2 with a score of 21-12 in the semi-final.
