Anthony Santander made history over the weekend by hitting his 22nd home run of the season in his first at-bat and his 13th in June, tying the record for Venezuelan players in the Major Leagues.

Santander was paired with Gleyber Torres, who since August 2019 held the record for home runs in a calendar month among Creoles, according to Baseball-Reference. The switch-hitting slugger is only the ninth Creole with multiple months of at least a dozen homers.

Santander, 29, broke the Orioles’ June home run record held by Chris Davis (2013), Albert Belle (2000), Rafael Palmeiro (1998) and Boog Powell (1964), all with 12.

VENEZUELANS WITH THE MOST MONTHS WITH AT LEAST 10 HOME RUNS IN MLB

  • Miguel Cabrera: 5 months
  • Ronald Acuña Jr.: 3 months
  • Andres Galarraga: 3 months
  • Carlos Gonzalez: 3 months
  • Richard Hidalgo: 3 months
  • Eugenio Suarez: 3 months
  • Magglio Ordonez: 2 months
  • Salvador Perez: 2 months
  • Anthony Santander: 2 months

Overall, the outfielder is two homers away from the calendar-month mark for a Baltimore slugger, held by Jim Gentile (15 in August 1961).

Baltimore, which is 16-5 when Santander hits home runs and 46-20 this season when its lineup produces home runs, leads the American League with 139 hits.

Anthony Santander is batting .274/.325/.670 (29-for-106), with three doubles, 13 homers, 19 runs scored, 26 RBIs and a .995 OPS in 27 games in June. A performance that has raised his overall average from .218 to .233 percentage points. For the month, he leads the Major Leagues in home runs and is second in RBIs.

If he maintains his current pace, he projects to finish the campaign with 43 home runs and 107 RBIs, figures that would crush his personal records in those departments (33 HR in 2002; 95 RBI in 2023). With information from LVBP.com
