Argentina beat Ecuador on penalties and qualified for the semi-finals of the Copa América football tournament

The Argentina men’s national soccer team beat Ecuador on penalties in the quarterfinals of the Copa América and thus qualified for the semifinal, where they will play the winner of Venezuela and Canada (the match is scheduled for Friday night at 3:00 AM Italian time). In regulation time, Argentina took the lead in the 35th minute with a header from Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez and remained ahead for most of the match: however, Ecuador managed to equalize with a goal from striker Kevin Rodriguez in the final minutes, in the 91st minute, thus sending the match into extra time.

In extra time, neither team managed to score and the match went to penalties: the first one for Argentina was missed by its captain and most representative player, Lionel Messi. Then, however, the situation was reversed thanks to two consecutive penalties saved by Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. In the end, the penalties were won by Argentina 4-2. The decisive one was scored by defender Nicolas Otamendi (of Benfica).
