Argentine Tennis Players Struggle at Wimbledon: Three Debuts, Three Losses

The start for the Argentine tennis players could not have been worse: three debuts, three lost matches and not even a set could be rescued by the Argentine players on the grass of Wimbledon, dragging a losing streak that has been extending throughout the grass tour.

Among the men, Sebastián Báez and Mariano Navone had their debut and farewell, as did Nadia Podoroska among the women. The number one in the national ranking had no chance and fell by a conclusive 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4 against the American Brandon Nakajima and accentuated the bad moment that he has been going through since before the start of Roland Garros.

Nakajima dominated his serve with 14 aces and got seven breaks of Baez’s serve, who was unable to take advantage of either of the two opportunities he created. In this way, the American needed less than two hours to beat a Baez who needs to rediscover his game to stay in the top 20.

Navone did not have an easy time either, losing 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 to Italian Lorenzo Sonego, former world number 21, in two hours and 26 minutes. After the explosion he had in the first five months of the year, the player from Nueve de Julio lost the spark that allowed him to climb to the Top 30 and is now going through a pronounced slump, despite having improved compared to his first matches of the grass-court tour.

Podoroska suffered her third defeat, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) against Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, seeded 28th. The Rosario native had a tough time in the first set and until the middle of the second, but recovered two breaks and was close to forcing a third set, but the Ukrainian gave her no chance in the tie-break and secured her victory.
