Francisco Comeseña has just achieved a triumph as unexpected as it is historic. The Argentine, who is ranked 122 in the ATP rankings and played his first match in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, beat Andrey Rublev (6th seed) in four sets to advance to the second round at Wimbledon.

With a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 and 7-6 in two hours and 58 minutes of play, the native of Mar del Plata achieved a key victory in his sporting career, in which he has a long history in Challenger tournaments. In addition, it is his triumphant debut against a player ranked among the 10 best rackets on the circuit and his participation in the men’s professional tour in a main draw.

“I think I was very lucky today, I don’t know what I did. I think I just enjoyed the match, the court, the people and I played my best tennis,” was the first thing Comesaña said in the post-match note on court number two of the All England complex.

Born on October 6, 2000, the Argentine tennis player was close to 500th place in the world rankings three years ago. His growth has been brilliant, thanks to his work and dedication alongside his coach Sebastián Gutiérrez, and he demonstrated this in his debut on the grass of Wimbledon by beating one of the most consistent tennis players of recent times, who is coming off being the champion at the Madrid Masters 1000.

Comesaña surprised Rublev from the start, winning the first set 6-4 thanks to an impeccable serve and strategic play. In the second set, the Russian equalized the score at 7-5, taking advantage of his ability to break the Argentine’s serve, who managed to save five set points against him.

However, Comesaña was not far behind, raising his level in the third set to impose the game with his forehand from the baseline and drop shots that led him to a convincing 6-2 after breaking Rublev’s serve on two occasions.

The fourth and decisive set was a close affair, with both players holding serve. Rublev had a set point while Comesaña was serving at 4-5, but he failed to convert it, and the match went to a tie-break. In this crucial phase, Comesaña showed his ability to handle pressure and won the final 7-5 after Rublev let his attempt to pass the ball into the net fail.

Once the Mar del Plata native’s victory was achieved, the public present on the court applauded Comesaña’s outstanding performance, who considered this triumph to be the most important of a career that is on the rise. After this iconic victory, the Argentine will face in the second round of the tournament par excellence on grass the Australian Adam Walton, who beat Federico Coria in straight sets (6-3, 6-3 and 7-5).
