Arthur Fils Makes History at Wimbledon, Caroline Garcia Falls Short: Day 4 Recap

Arthur Fils achieved the feat on Thursday of qualifying for the third round of Wimbledon, something he had never done before in a Grand Slam, while Caroline Garcia was once again stopped in the second round this year.

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard easily made it to the third round where Lucas Pouille, Quentin Halys and Gaël Monfils also await him.

. It goes (5): Fils, Monfils, Pouille, Halys, Mpetshi Perricard

“The end was very strange. He’s a good friend so I’m really sad for him. But I’m also very happy to play another match at Wimby”: Arthur Fils (34th in the world) certainly regretted the injury of Hubert Hurkacz (7th) and semi-finalist in 2021, but he especially enjoyed the continuation of his adventure.

With the two men tied at 7/7 in the fourth set tie-break, the Pole injured his right knee. He tried to resume play but gave up before playing the second match point in favor of Fils and while the score was 7-6 (7/2), 6-4, 2-6, 6-6 (9/8) in favor of the 20-year-old Frenchman.

He will face the Russian Roman Safiullin (44th) to try to reach the round of 16.

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (58th), who was drafted from the qualifiers, continues to advance: as expected, he stunned his opponent Yoshihito Nishioka (90th) with his serve (69% of his serve did not come back to him, with 27 aces) to win 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 in just 1h11.

“He really expressed the fact that he was fed up, angry, overwhelmed by that (the services) so I had even more confidence in that sector. The fact that he showed it helped me, I said to myself +we have to continue, we have to steamroller, we have to walk all over him+. And I really played my game well,” analyzed Mpetshi Perricard.

He is playing his first Wimbledon at the age of 20 and has never yet won a Grand Slam match, with two participations so far at Roland-Garros (2023, 2024).

He will face the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori (87th) to try to reach the round of 16.

Gaël Monfils, 33rd in the world at 37 years old, won 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) the duel of the old players against the Swiss Stan Wawrinka (95th), the tournament’s oldest player at 39 years old.

He reached the last 16 in 2018, but has only played twice on London turf since then, without getting past the second round.

For his thirteenth Wimbledon, he will try to return to the second week by facing the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (10th) on Friday.

Lucas Pouille (212th) also benefited from the withdrawal of his Australian opponent Thanasi Kokkinakis (93rd), injured in a knee, while the Frenchman was leading 2-6, 7-5, 5-2.

At 30, Pouille, who reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2016 but has been battling injuries for years, will face another Australian, Alex De Minaur (9th), in an attempt to reach the last 16.

No stroke of luck, however, for Quentin Halys (220th) who beat the Russian Karen Khachanov (22nd) 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and thus returns to the third round like last year, his best result to date in a Grand Slam.

He will face the Dane Holger Rune (15th) to try to reach the round of 16.

. Ça casse (2): Garcia, Rinderknech

Sad three out of three for Caroline Garcia (24th): as at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros, the French No. 1 was eliminated in the second round.

At Wimbledon, it was the American Bernarda Pera (97th) who took charge, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The 30-year-old from Lyon had reached the last 16 twice on the London turf (2017, 2022) and was coming off a defeat in the third round last year.

With her elimination, there are no more French players in the women’s table.

Arthur Rinderknech, who won his first match in four appearances at Wimbledon on Wednesday, took a set from American Taylor Fritz (12th) before losing 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
