Bamberg Baskets to Make Historic Debut in European North Basketball League

In addition to the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga, the Bamberg Baskets will also take part in an international competition next season. Head Coach Anton Gavel’s team will be the first German team ever to compete in the European North Basketball League (ENBL) and will represent Freak City in the rapidly growing league founded in 2021.

Edgars Zanders (General Secretary of ENBL):
“The participation of the Bamberg Baskets in the competition is another big step forward for the European North Basketball League. Bamberg basketball with its outstanding quality is a trademark in European club basketball. The developments in Bamberg over the last three decades have contributed to the German Bundesliga becoming one of the top leagues in Europe alongside the ACB in Spain. We say: Welcome, Bamberg Baskets!”

Anton Gavel (Head Coach Bamberg Baskets):

“We are looking forward to the games in the ENBL, because this young league has developed massively in a very short time and we can compete here with teams that we already know from the Basketball Champions League or the FIBA Europe Cup – for example the reigning ENBL champion from Aarhus, the Bakken Bears, Donar Groningen or the Romanians from CSO Voluntari, from whom we have recently recruited a player in KeyShawn Feazell. The competition is interesting for us as an organization, but of course also for the players, who much prefer playing to training anyway.”

Philipp Höhne (Managing Director of Bamberger Basketball GmbH):

“We made a conscious decision to take part in the ENBL because we are guaranteed a place in the group stage. For Anton and the team, this means that we can gain rhythm and additional match practice in at least eight matches, which should help us to reach our potential as a team for the easyCredit BBL more quickly. The fact that we are seeded in the ENBL also allows us to plan much better. I think I speak for all the fans here in Freak City when I say that Bamberg simply has to play internationally. Participation in an international competition is a key factor in the recruitment process these days and we deliberately used this when putting together the team.”

The field of participants in the European North Basketball League:

The ENBL was founded in the summer of 2021 and initially started with eight teams. The upcoming fourth season of the European North Basketball League will already have a starting field of 18 teams. In addition to our Bamberg Baskets, the defending champions, the Bakken Bears (DEN), CSO Voluntari (ROU), Donar Groningen (NED), Dziki Warsaw (POL), Dinamo Bucharest (ROU), Inter Bratislava (SVK), Fyllingen Basket (NOR), Ulikool Tartu (EST), Brno Basket (CZE), Valmiera Glass Via (LAT), Keila Basket (EST), Bristol Flyers (GBR) and Spišski Rytieri (SVK) will take part in the game. The filling of the four currently vacant starting places will be announced shortly.

The game mode in the European North Basketball League:

Divided into two groups of nine teams each, a single round with eight matches per team is played. The opponents against which the teams will play at home and away are drawn at random, as is the composition of the two groups. When the groups are drawn, it is not possible for teams from the same country to end up in the same group.

Following the group phase, the playoffs will take place, each played in a home and away format in the format 1st Group A vs. 4th Group B / 2nd Group A vs. 3rd Group B / 1st Group B vs. 4th Group B / 2nd Group B vs. 3rd Group A. The winners of these four playoff pairings qualify for the Final Four of the ENBL.
