Bayern Munich wants to sign Leverkusen’s defensive leader Jonathan Tah. Bayer 04, on the other hand, is looking for a replacement for the international player. Former Dortmund player Mats Hummels is also among the possible candidates.

More than 25 million euros are at stake in the transfer poker between Bayer 04 and FC Bayern Munich for national player Jonathan Tah. Leverkusen’s defense chief, who is still tied to the factory club until 2025, wants to move to the German record champions.
The transfer fee is the sticking point. But not the only one. The double winners from Leverkusen need an adequate replacement for the central defender, who is considered one of four “irreplaceables” in Xabi Alonso’s successful team.
After Waldemar Anton (27), who is still at Stuttgart and can move for a fixed transfer fee of 22.5 million euros, decided in favor of BVB over Bayer and is off the market as a candidate with a very good price-performance ratio, similarly attractive overall packages are rare.
Hummels meets many of Leverkusen’s criteria, but not all
The candidates who completely meet Leverkusen’s requirements are usually extremely expensive if they do not have a favorable release clause. Others are cheaper, but Leverkusen officials do not allow them to snap up immediately because there are also question marks about them.
Like Mats Hummels (35), for example, whose contract with Borussia Dortmund ended on Sunday. The profile of the German international, who missed out on the European Championship squad despite a strong second half of the season, meets many of Leverkusen’s criteria very well.
Hummels not only has experience, he is a leader and could take on Tah’s role. With his header strength in both attack and defence, the 1.91 metre tall defender could also be helpful in dealing with Leverkusen’s weakness in opposing set pieces. There is no doubt that Hummels, as an excellent technician with his neat opening play, fits perfectly into Xabi Alonso’s possession football.
VAR madness: How much luck was involved in the German victory? (With Timo Baumgartl)
Germany is in the quarter-finals of the European Championship at home – after a furious match against Denmark. The main actors were not only the two teams on the pitch, but also the storm over Dortmund and the VAR. We take a look at it with Schalke’s Timo Baumgartl and DFB reporter Oliver Hartmann and clarify why Antonio Rüdiger is so important for the team and whether Joshua Kimmich’s foul would have been called in England. In addition, Switzerland knocked out defending champion Italy and Argentina took their third win in the third group match at the Copa America.

The only thing the right-footer doesn’t live up to expectations is his speed. Although Hummels recently covered this up very well at BVB, even at the highest Champions League level, with strong tackling and outstanding anticipation and timing.
However, this was often the case in a deep-lying BVB team, where the lack of pace was not such a major factor. The crucial question is whether this deficit could be tolerated or compensated for centrally in a high-positioned three-man chain. This is why Hummels is part of Leverkusen’s thinking, but not yet the chosen candidate.
