Bayer Leverkusen Begins Bundesliga Title Defense with Rhine Derby Against Borussia Mönchengladbach

Bayer Leverkusen’s mission to defend its title begins with a cracker away from home. To kick off the 62nd Bundesliga season, the champions and cup winners from Leverkusen will face the explosive Rhine derby at Borussia Mönchengladbach on August 23. The free-TV broadcaster Sat.1 and the streaming service DAZN will broadcast the match live.

Borussia vs. Bayer for the fourth time at the start of the season

Last season, Leverkusen beat Gladbach 3-0. In the second half of the season, the score was 0-0 – it was the only domestic match of the season in which the double winners failed to score. The Rhineland rivals have faced each other three times on the first matchday of a season. In 1991, Bayer won 1-0 at home, and in 2016 (1-2) and 2018 (0-2) they lost away.

For Borussia, it is already the fourth opening game of the season. Before that, they played against Bayern three times. “We are delighted that Borussia Park is the venue for the first Bundesliga game of the new season and that we are therefore challenging the German champions,” said sports director Roland Virkus. Coach Gerardo Seoane’s team is hoping for a historic victory: in 22 years, no challenger has ever been able to beat the defending champions in the opening match.

Four weeks later to Munich

The Werkself’s first home game in the following week will be against RB Leipzig, as was the case last season. In between there is the first round match in the DFB Cup against Carl Zeiss Jena, which was moved there because of the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart (17 August).

After the Leipzig game, Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg await – and then Bayern. On matchday 5, the Werkself will be visiting Munich, on the weekend of September 27th to 29th, during the Oktoberfest.

Vice-champion Stuttgart will be visiting Leverkusen on November 2nd, and the duel with Borussia Dortmund will not take place until the new year: Bayer will be visiting BVB on matchday 16, which will be played from January 9th to 11th, 2025. On matchday 17, FSV Mainz will come to the BayArena, so the season will end on May 17th, 2025 in Rheinhessen.
