For the Romanians, the European Championship in Germany is over after their defeat against the Netherlands (0:3) in the round of 16 – but they left the tournament with gratitude and showed this in an astonishing gesture. Before they left, the dressing room in Munich was tidied and even cleaned, as pictures show. They left a message for hosts Germany on a bench.

On the A4 sheet of paper with the coat of arms of the Romanian national team, the Romanians thanked us in their native language and also in German for the experiences they were able to have in Germany: “The UEFA Euro 2024 was one of the most important football experiences for all of us so far and we are very happy that the stage on which it took place was Germany. Every game, every emotion, every experience brought us together to feel the magic of football.”

It continues: “We are leaving Germany with the feeling that we have given everything for Romania and are grateful for everything we have experienced here. It was an honour to be part of the big family of European football. Thank you for making us feel at home! We are grateful for the conditions offered. They are an important part of the wonderful experiences we had at Euro 2024. The Romanian national team.”

Remembering the 1994 World Cup

Romania reached the round of 16 with a win against Ukraine (3:0), a loss against Belgium (0:2) and a draw against Slovakia (1:1). Their dream of reaching the quarter-finals was shattered against the Dutch. Almost exactly 30 years after the Romanians’ great success with Anghel Iordanescu as coach in the World Cup round of 16 against Argentina (3:2), his son Edward Iordanescu was denied a similar tournament coup as coach.
