Late on Thursday evening, Steve Mounié said goodbye to the fans of Stade Brest with warm words, and now his move to FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga is confirmed. “Some will understand, others won’t, but I just ask you to respect my decision,” the 29-year-old striker wrote on Instagram. He will now receive a three-year contract with the option for a further season at FCA.

“FC Augsburg has made a lot of efforts to get me and offers me the best conditions to bring my strengths onto the pitch,” said Mounié about his move. “I will give everything for the club from the first training session and do my part to ensure that we have a successful season. I am also very proud that the move will make me the first Benin international to play in three of the five top leagues in Europe.”

Augsburg does not have to pay a transfer fee because Mounié’s contract in Brittany expired after last season. Most recently, with a market value of 6 million euros, he was one of the six most valuable center forwards on the market without a club. At FCA, he could succeed Ermedin Demirovic (26), who may move to VfB Stuttgart. The Bosnian’s market value, which has risen to 28 million euros to date, was just as high when he arrived in Augsburg in 2022 as the one Mounié is now coming for. Demirovic is now looking at a record transfer fee.

Mounié has played for Brest in Ligue 1 since 2020/21, scoring nine goals in each of his first two seasons and contributing another six goals in each of the last two seasons with fewer appearances. In the cup, he also scored in February in a 3-1 loss against PSG. He is the fifth external new signing for FCA. The Bavarian Swabians had to pay a transfer fee for the previous four plus Kristijan Jakic (27), who was signed permanently after a loan, and spent a total of just under 15 million euros.

Sporting director Marinko Jurendic said of the new striker: “Steve Mounié is a physically robust attacker with a strong header who is particularly impressive with his skills in the opposition’s penalty area. Steve has experience at the highest European level and his personality should also be an important pillar for our team.”
