Boca Juniors’ Road to Copa Sudamericana Round of 16: Challenges and Preparations

Boca is far from reaching the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana in the ideal scenario. Despite the fact that the match against Independiente del Valle was decided more than a month ago, it suffered obstacles such as the call-up of its three U-23 gems to the Olympic Games (Kevin Zenón, Equi Fernández, Cristian Medina) and the injuries. It is true that it has strengthened and that will allow Diego Martínez to solve some issues, but the problem at a structural level is evident and the team in the general balance between losses and incorporations was affected for this series.

However, there is no room for regrets and the focus at the Ezeiza grounds is fully focused on arriving on Wednesday as well prepared as possible. For this reason, this Monday the squad carried out the penultimate training session, key to finishing polishing the last details, before traveling tomorrow to Ecuadorian lands. The panorama of the eleven to play on Wednesday is now clearer, because the coach did a formal test and stopped a probable one.

With Luis Advíncula having almost miraculously recovered from the inflammation in his Achilles tendon, there are not too many doubts about Boca’s starting eleven, since with Cristian Lema injured, Nicolás Figal and Aaron Anselmino still recovering from their injuries, the alternative to accompany Marcos Rojo in the back line will be Lautaro Di Lollo, while Gary Medel, who today joined the training again after having traveled to Chile urgently due to the death of his mother, this time moved as a midfielder.

Who was alongside the Chilean? Martínez opted for Milton Delgado as his sidekick in the centre circle, while the reinforcements Tomás Belmonte and Brian Aguirre, usually a winger but improvised as a midfielder due to the absences, occupied the wings.

The forward line is a certainty, with the usual Uruguayan duo of Edinson Cavani and Miguel Merentiel; therefore, the only sector that leaves some room for surprises – precisely the most damaged – is the midfield. On Tuesday, in the last practice before flying to Ecuador, the formation will be defined, but in principle everything is already on track at Boca.

The Boca team that Diego Martínez stopped in practice

Sergio Romero; Luis Advincula, Lautaro Di Lollo, Marcos Rojo, Lautaro Blanco; Tomas Belmonte, Gary Medel, Milton Delgado, Brian Aguirre; Miguel Merentiel and Edinson Cavani.
