Boston Celtics Sign Jayson Tatum to Record-Breaking $314 Million Contract Extension

The Boston Celtics have signed star player Jayson Tatum to a record five-year, $314 million contract extension.

It is the largest deal ever offered in NBA history.

At 26, Tatum helped the Celtics win their 18th NBA title last season with a five-game victory over the Dallas Mavericks. In 74 games last season, Tatum averaged 26.9 points per game, 8.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists.

The six-foot-nine forward, who was drafted third overall by the Celtics in 2017, has emerged as one of the NBA’s best two-way talents on the wing, partnering with Jaylen Brown — who Boston signed to what was a record-breaking extension a year ago — to form arguably the best tandem in the league today.

The Celtics also signed Derrick White to a four-year, $126 million contract earlier Monday.

Tatum and White join Jaylen Brown (5 years, $285 million) and Jrue Holiday (4 years, $135 million) who also signed new deals after their NBA Finals triumph. The Celtics will pay $860 million for four players. Boston now has all of its starting lineup under contract through at least 2025-26.

Tatum has been named to the All-Star Game five times and to the All-Star team four times – including being a first-team selection. All-NBA in each of the last three seasons. After winning a gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, he is also expected to be part of Team USA at the Paris Olympics this summer as the men’s national team looks to win its fifth consecutive gold medal.
