Bouzas defeats reigning champion Vondrousova in first round of Wimbledon

Munar beats Harris and Carballés loses to Zverev in the men’s draw

MADRID, 2 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish tennis player Jessica Bouzas beat the reigning champion of the tournament, Czech Marketa Vondrousova, in the first round of Wimbledon on Tuesday, the third Grand Slam of the year, which is being played on grass. The match was much more than the Galician, who won in two sets (6-4, 6-2) in 1 hour and 19 minutes.

Bouzas, 21, made history in her Wimbledon debut by eliminating the defending champion, ranked number six in the world, in the first round, in a match that she dominated from start to finish. The Spaniard, ranked number 83 in the world, thus achieved her first victory in a Grand Slam tournament as a professional player.

The Galician gave no chance to a particularly erratic Vondrousova, with 28 unforced errors, as well as a contemplative one with a serve that she gave up on up to five occasions during the match and with which she committed seven double faults. Quite the opposite for Bouzas, who despite signing 59% of first serves, was solid, committing only 14 unforced errors.

From the start, the Galician showed that she wanted to do damage on her opponent’s serve; in fact, the first break came in the first game of the match. However, the Czech champion recovered and hit back at the Spaniard in the fourth game, breaking Bouzas’ serve for the first and only time in the set.

The Spanish player’s decisive blow to take the first set came at 3-3. At that point, she broke the Czech’s serve for the second time, a situation that she did consolidate in her next two turns, to end up taking the first set 6-4.

Bouzas’ superiority was even more evident in the second set. As in the previous set, the Galician broke her opponent’s serve in the first game, and it was not the only occasion, as she also managed to do so in the third and seventh games. Three breaks that, despite losing her serve once, led to the Spanish player’s victory by a resounding 6-2.

In the second round, the Galician will face her compatriot Cristina Bucsa, who beat Romanian Ana Bogdan in the third set tie-break 10-5 in the first round. Before that, both had won a set each 6-4 in a duel that was stopped twice due to rain and ended in three hours and 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, the Catalan Rebeka Masarova said goodbye to the grass of London after losing 6-3, 4-6 and 6-2 to the Russian Liudmila Samsonova, in just over two hours of play. The Tenerife player Roberto Carballés also did not make it to the round of 32 due to his defeat by 6-2, 6-4 and 6-2 against the German Alexander Zverev, currently number 4 in the ATP rankings.

Zverev’s 0-40 lead at the start of the match foreshadowed a difficult afternoon for the Canary Islander, who did lose his serve in the fifth game and also in the seventh to lose the opening set in half an hour. In the second set, the German broke his opponent’s serve again in the fifth game to consolidate his lead and accelerate.

With two sets in his pocket, ‘Sascha’ dealt a blow to his opponent by breaking in the first game of the third set. Although Carballés immediately had a favourable 0-40 lead, he squandered it and was already trailing until he was finally defeated. Zverev therefore advanced to the next round, just like Serbian Novak Djokovic, who won 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 against Czech Vit Kopriva.

In the round of 32, there will also be the Mallorcan Jaume Munar, who beat the British Billy Harris 6-4, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3 in two hours and 46 minutes of play. In the next phase, the Balearic tennis player will face the Australian Alex de Miñaur, who defeated his compatriot James Duckworth 7-6(1), 7-6(3) and 7-6(4) in more than three hours of play.
