An unhappy Costa Rica
In the other match in Group D, Costa Rica had a tiny hope of qualifying, in the event of a big win against Paraguay and a clear defeat for Brazil. But the result of the Seleçao condemned the Ticos, who had started off on a high note. Well aware of the need to achieve a feat, they were leading 2-0 after seven short minutes, thanks to Francisco Calvo, with a header from a cross by Carlos Mora (3rd), and a superb breakthrough by Josimar Alcocer (7th).
But these were the only two Costa Rican shots of the match, Paraguay taking the upper hand during the remaining 83 minutes, without managing to score more than one goal, signed by Ramon Sosa, who at least had the merit of being superb (55th). Costa Rica won its first victory of the competition, in pain (2-1), without avoiding elimination for all that.
