Bronny James: A Future Lakers Player, But Will He See Action?

By Mathieu S. | NBA Editor

New Lakers player with a guaranteed multi-year contract, Bronny James will make his debut with the team next October. But it could be short-lived.

Bronny James is officially a Los Angeles Lakers player, having signed a 4-year contract for just under $8 million according to Shams Charania. A very generous deal for a player selected in 55th position in the draft, proof that the influence of LeBron and Rich Paul is real. Let’s just say that the other players in the second round are not as lucky as Bronny.

But the pressure is now on for the Angelinos and their new player. Everyone wants to see Bronny on the court with LeBron, even if it will take until October. We also want to know if JJ Redick is thinking about integrating him into his rotation, and how the Angelinos will manage to give playing time to the member of the James family.

Bronny James away from the Lakers?

For Adrian Wojnarowski, the answer is relatively simple: Bronny is not expected to spend much time with the Lakers. At least not at first. Despite a multi-year contract, he should quickly be sent to the G-League to develop his game and get minutes. He will not be in the Purple and Gold’s rotation immediately, according to Woj.

A cash expert on the state of the Lakers: “Players don’t want to sign anymore because…

Adrian Wojnarowski : “What the Lakers expect from him is for him to be a true G-League player, like any 19-year-old second-round draft pick. What we can expect to see is Bronny James in the NBA the first week of the season with his dad… I don’t want to say in a ceremonial setting, but we know everyone’s eyes will be on him.”

“They’ll do that for the first week of the season, but nobody expects Bronny James to be in the Lakers’ rotation after that.”

If the Angelinos have agreed to make a financial effort for Bronny, while offering him a certain stability, there is no question of taking risks for the season. James remains a player far from the NBA level currently and who could quickly be overtaken by his opponents. A season in the G-League, or even more, is the best possible thing for him.

Bronny James will be a Laker next year, but that doesn’t mean he’ll play a ton in the City of Angels. For Adrian Wojnarowski, we’re definitely heading toward a G-League season for LeBron’s son.
