Bronny James Signs First NBA Contract with the Los Angeles Lakers: How Much Will He Earn?

Passionate about basketball, he moved to San Antonio to follow Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs after graduating from IEJ, his gaze constantly fixed on the NBA, both on the court and in statistics and contracts.

Selected in 55th position in the draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, Bronny James was, in theory, not guaranteed to get a contract in the NBA. But the case of LeBron James’ son is special and it is mainly the details of his first contract that remained to be determined. So, how much will he earn for his debut in the league?

Officially signed since July 2, Bronny James is now a member of the Los Angeles Lakers full-fledged. The 55th overall pick in the NBA draft agreed to a four-year contract with an option, shortly after his father’s extension, LeBron.

Bronny James: a first contract worth more than 8 million

THE Lakers announced the signing of Bronny Jamesbut did not specify the length or salary. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the 19-year-old signed for four years for $7.9 million. His salary for his rookie season is estimated at $1.2 million, rising to $2.5 million for the final year. This is a far cry from the $49 million his father will earn in 2023-24, as part of a new two-year, $104 million contract signed earlier in the week.

The contract, which binds Bronny James to Lakers through the end of the 2027-28 season, includes a team option allowing the team to decide whether or not to keep him after his third season. While rare, this structure is not unheard of for a player selected in the second round, and his agents had indicated that he would not accept a “two-way” contract. James does not appear to have received any extraordinary preferential treatment for his contract.

“The pressure has increased a notch”

“Certainly, the pressure is up. I’ve seen on social media and online that maybe I don’t deserve to be in the NBA,” Bronny James said Tuesday of the challenge of playing alongside his father. “But I’ve dealt with that kind of criticism my whole life. This is no different, just amplified. But I’m going to get through it.”

This first contract is an opportunity for Bronny James to prove that he really has the NBA. To get the next ones, however, he will have to show clear progression. “Rob told me there is a great development system here. I just want to come in, work and get better every day,” James said on the subject.
