Building Bridges: 2024 China-US Youth Exchange Week Celebrates Century-Old Friendship in Guling

On June 27, a sports exchange event, as one of the series of activities of the 2024 “Gulingyuan” China-US Youth Exchange Week, was held at the Straits Youth Exchange Center in Fuzhou. American coaches guided Chinese youth to experience the “first baseball lesson.”

100 years ago, groups of Westerners forged deep friendships with the local residents in Guling, Fuzhou.

More than 30 years ago, an elderly American man, on his deathbed, used the familiar Fuzhou accent “KuLiang” to evoke dusty memories.

Young people from China and the United States took a group photo with their hands showing a heart after completing a friendly basketball match.

From June 23 to 29 this year, more than 200 young people from the United States and more than 300 young people from China gathered in Rongcheng to participate in the 2024 “Gulingyuan” Sino-US Youth Exchange Week. They wandered among the mountains and rivers of Fujian, listened to the old people telling stories about Guling, planted trees symbolizing friendship, checked in at natural and cultural landmarks, and collided, communicated, and felt together in salons, forums, singing and dancing, sports, food, cocktail parties and other activities. Their bright smiles were filled with the century-old love of Guling.

Guests from China and the United States attended the “Mountain and Sea Love·Ningxia Red Wine Tasting” event.

The wind from Guling keeps blowing to the other side of the ocean.

Friendship between countries depends on friendship between people. As Mu Yanling, a researcher of Guling history and culture and the founder of “Friends of Guling”, said: “The history of Guling tells us that people from different countries and cultural backgrounds can establish friendly relations and pass them on from generation to generation. We are all the inheritors of this legacy.” (Reporter Shi Chenjing)

American guests had an immersive experience of Fujian’s intangible cultural heritage and experienced the custom of Xiapu women wearing flowers in their hair.

The former “Guling Girlfriends” hugged each other tightly and talked intimately. Bi Lehua (right), the granddaughter of “Guling Friend” Ke Zhiren, and Fuzhou citizen Li Yiying were childhood playmates. They were born on the same day, which happened to be the anniversary of Yinghua Middle School. Their parents took one character from the school name and named them “Ying” and “Hua”.
