Caen Sets Up Olympic Village Showcasing Various Disciplines Ahead of 2024 Olympics

Until July 28, the city of Caen has set up a large Olympic village to showcase more than ten disciplines. International delegations will also be there before the start of the Olympic Games.

THE Olympic Games have already started in Caen. While waiting for the official launch of the competition, an Olympic village has been set up on the esplanade of the Town Hall. On the programme: basketball, tennis and volleyball.

On the 100-meter track, installed by the Caen Athletic Club, the budding athletes are already in the starting blocks. The goal: “to introduce athletics to the youngest, but also to the less young”, emphasizes Vincent, sports coach at the Caen Athletic Club, on BFM Normandie.

Badminton, petanque, table tennis

“Everyone can get started through these running, hurdling and sprinting workshops. It’s on a 25-metre track, so everyone can do it. We also have a high jump,” he adds.

“The youngest ones go back and forth!” explains the coach. “They love it, they get caught up in the game.”

Further on, others try badminton, pétanque and table tennis. A sandy pitch also allows you to discover the specificities of beach soccer, beach rugby and beach volleyball.

In total, 12 free activities are available in the Caen Olympic village, not to mention the numerous events organized every day.

Although not all of the disciplines presented are Olympic, they allow you to discover a wide range of sports and perhaps inspire vocations.

Four international delegations at the meeting

Several international delegations will also be passing through Caen for the Olympic Games. The Chinese women’s volleyball team, among the best in the world, will, for example, be hosted at the Palais des Sports from July 17 to 23. “The players and staff should offer a training session open to the public,” announced the city of Caen.

Another training session open to the public will take place: Canadian swimmers are preparing before the start of the Games at the Eugène-Maës Nautical Stadium, until July 23. Thus, on Thursday, July 18, all curious people are invited to watch the training of the 49 swimmers for free from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Six athletes from the international refugee delegation are also training in Caen until Tuesday July 16 (two swimmers and four canoeists).

As for the Olympic Village, it will remain in place until Sunday, July 28, two days after the start of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. all week and until 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

In August, Caen will get back into the sporting rhythm by welcoming the Colombian Paralympic delegation, which will prepare for the Paralympic Games in the heart of Calvados.
