Celebrating 35 Years of Baseball: Hobby Tournament Brings Together Over 80 Participants

Over 80 participants in seven teams came together for the hobby tournament as part of the anniversary celebration “35 years of baseball in St. Ingbert” at the TV St. Ingbert Devils in the Wallerfeld ball park. Prime Minister Anke Rehlinger recognized the Devils’ voluntary commitment.

Since the mid-1990s, the baseball players of the St. Ingbert gymnastics club have been holding regular hobby tournaments. This year’s tournament, however, was dedicated to the club’s 35th anniversary. Founded in 1989, the Devils are the oldest baseball club in Saarland.

The anniversary celebration began with a first pitch ceremony, during which Prime Minister Anke Rehlinger and the representative of the city of St. Ingbert, Albrecht Hauck, opened the tournament with their throws. In her speech, Rehlinger particularly highlighted the volunteer work of the Devils: “This club is not only an excellent ambassador for baseball in our region, but also a shining example of active club life and outstanding volunteer work in Saarland. Thanks to you, the Saarland sports landscape is one of the most diverse and vibrant in all of Germany.”

Among the guests of honor were Anke Rehlinger, Albrecht Hauck and Marc Zingraff, mayor of the town of Sarreguemines. The head of the baseball department of TV St. Ingbert, Mark Unbehend, told a few anecdotes from the Devils’ early years and emphasized that the Devils are the reigning southwest German cup winners, as the cup has not been held since the victory in 2010.

After the ceremonial opening, the focus quickly shifted to sports. Seven teams with imaginative names such as “Krasse Herde”, “Funky Flamingos”, “FC Babbe Warriors”, “Heavy Hitters”, “Haribo” and “Allfield Merchis” competed against each other in two groups on two fields. There were a few mistakes to be seen at the beginning, but as the tournament progressed, the rules were quickly internalized and the moves and hits looked as if the participants had never done anything else but play baseball.

The group winners met in the final. The exciting match between FC Babbe Warriors and Team CISPA was decided by a three-point home run. Team CISPA won 7:1 and took home the tournament trophy. A special feature of the tournament was the intensive exchange with other clubs and companies. Both company and school staff competed as teams. The primary school in Merchweiler deserves special mention, as its school social worker and teachers competed together in the “Allfield Merchis” team.

Both participants and the numerous spectators had a lot of fun playing baseball. The extensive supporting program in the style of a neighborhood and family festival, with a non-alcoholic cocktail bar, bouncy castle, a performance by the cheerleading group “Saarpfalz Shamrocks” and other attractions, provided the best entertainment.

The tournament once again showed the focus of the baseball and softball department of TV St. Ingbert: fun and the promotion of popular sports are the main focus. The Devils are always looking for new members in all age groups. Anyone interested can come to training at any time and try out baseball or softball.
