From Monday 22 July to Friday 26 July, the International Youth Games took place in Rendsburg this year. After last year’s edition, which was organised by and in Lancaster, it was now Rendsburg’s turn.
The goal of the International Youth Games is to meet and make new friends with people from other countries through sports. This year, compared to the host families of last year, we slept in schools. A week full of fun and badminton was ahead!
Monday
On Monday we arrived in Rendsburg after a long bus ride of almost 9 hours. We prepared our sleeping places in the school and we had something to eat. After dinner we met the other badminton players from Germany and Denmark. We played a nice game of football with all of them. After this everyone was pretty tired from the day of travel and we went to sleep.
Tuesday
Tuesday morning we started with some yoga led by the Danish coach. Then we had breakfast and got ready for the first real day. This day was all about getting to know each other better and doing fun activities. For the first activity, the children from different countries were paired up in groups with a leader. A fun treasure hunt was set up through the city, where the children had to do various tasks together. In this way, the children not only saw the sports hall this week, but they also saw the city of Rendsburg. After the treasure hunt we had a short break to eat our lunch. Then there was a ‘fun tournament’ on the program. The children had to pick a card and then play a game on the track of the card for about 10 minutes. Many fun games were played and there was more and more of a connection between the children from the different countries. After the games we freshened up and got ready for the opening ceremony. During the opening ceremony, the children proudly carried the Dutch flag through the city and then danced on the stage on the square to the song ‘Links Rechts’. When the Youth games were officially opened, we went back to the place where we sleep and the children played some games and chatted together.
Wednesday
Wednesday was the first day of the tournament. This day was all about the singles. The children played fun matches and won several prizes. In category A, gold was won by Tristan and Sara. Quinn won a bronze medal. In category B, gold was won by Yatharth and Harshini. Henri and Femke won a bronze medal. After this, the children put on their best clothes and we went to eat at a Steakhouse. After dinner, we dropped the children off at the disco and they had a nice evening together.
Thursday
Thursday was the doubles’ turn. Here too, some great games were played and the children did their best. We also took home several medals in this event. In category A, Tristan won gold together with Quinn and Sara and Caitlin took home a silver medal. In category B, Femke and Harshini also won gold. Henri and Thijs won a silver medal. After this tournament day, we had a delicious meal with all the countries from the BBQ that was organised. In the evening, there was free time to play games together.
Friday
Friday was the last day of the tournament. On this day the mixed doubles were played. Some of them were feeling the muscle pain of the past few days, but they still did their very best. In category A, Quinn and Sara won silver and Tristan and Caitlin bronze. In category B, Thijs and Femke won bronze and Henri and Harshini took home gold. After the last tournament day, we got ready for the closing ceremony. Here we were able to watch great performances by the athletes of culture. Then we had dinner together at the Italian and went back to our sleeping place. Here the children had a great evening and many shirts were exchanged. It was a very successful week and we are already looking forward to next year!
Youth Games Aalborg 2025
Next year it is Aalborg’s turn to organize the international youth games. These will take place from 5 to 10 August 2025 for children born in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Would you like to participate? Send an email to [email protected].
Important: sign the petition
The Youth Games are in danger. The municipality of Almere has decided to stop financing the Youth Games, because they apparently do not understand the concept of sports and social contacts.
That’s why we want to ask you all to sign the petition:
