The Hyogo Bravers, a member of the Sawakami Kansai Independent League based in Sanda and Nishiwaki, Hyogo Prefecture, began accepting Ugandan players in 2012, and six players have played there so far. The opportunity came from Tanaka Katsuhisa, who was a JICA overseas volunteer and coached baseball in Uganda at the time. Tanaka was delighted to find that there were many players in Uganda who were at a higher level than he had imagined, and that many of them had exceptional physical abilities. However, when he asked the players about their dreams for the future, he was shocked to hear them answer “to become a coach.” This was because he had assumed that they would answer that they wanted to become major leaguers or professional baseball players. Since then, Tanaka has been involved in baseball in Uganda for over 10 years, with the goal of creating a place where players can enjoy baseball safely and helping players dream big.

In order to support the Ugandan player of the Hyogo Bravers and cheer on Ugandan player KATO (Kato Edrin, hereafter referred to as “Kato”), who is currently a member of the team, JICA Kansai will co-host the Sawakami Kansai Independent League official games in 2024, following on from 2023.
On the day, JICA Kansai will also have a booth to introduce the activities of baseball team members dispatched to various countries around the world and to display baseball uniforms from around the world. In addition, you can hear the experiences of a former JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteer who was active in baseball instruction in Brazil.
