Chilean Judoka Mary Dee Vargas Prepares for 2024 Paris Olympic Games

In a new edition of Mujeres al Deporte, Macarena Miranda spoke with Chilean judoka Mary Dee Vargas about her qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and her preparation to face the five-ring event.

“Last time, I was the first woman to qualify, but there was only one qualification, which was what had historically been the case. This year, two people can qualify, thanks to the fact that I managed to achieve this direct qualification, which means being among the 25 best in the world,” she added.

Along these lines, he explained that: “By opening that possibility, there is a continental quota left for the best in America, where my partner Tomás (Briceño) comes in to take that quota and historically we can classify two people in judo, which is something “That we have been looking for a long time.”

Mary Dee Vargas and her path to Paris 2024

Regarding her qualifying process and her previous performance in Tokyo 2020, the Team Chile athlete said: “Tokyo was a very different situation from Paris. Today, I think that as an athlete, Paris finds me much more mature, prepared and clear about my objective. But it has also been an extremely difficult and arduous process.”

“I had to come abroad to prepare and face this qualification process, which has been quite difficult on a personal level, but in the end it has that great value of saying I did it. We are here and preparing for the Olympic Games in my own way, just as I dreamed of,” she added.

Likewise, he addressed his goal in the Olympic event. “It was what we wanted to achieve, to be able to go participate in these Olympic Games and be a rival to beat, really be one of those who can have a good result,” she stated.

Finally, Mary Dee Vargas referred to her life in Valencia, where she currently lives: “I am in a place that is quite pleasant. Spain has received me very well, it has treated me like at home, but of course, my routine is based on training in the morning, in the afternoon and trying to rest as well as possible.”

“It has been quite arduous, a lot of travel, work and preparation. The truth is that we have worked hard these years to be able to complete this process with the Paris 2024 Games,” he added.
