Chinese Athlete’s Death Highlights Need for Proper Emergency Response in Badminton Tournaments

JAKARTA – The incident of the death of Chinese men’s singles athlete Zhang Zhi Jie during the Badminton Asia Championship (BAJC) 2024 tournament held in Yogyakarta continues to be criticized.

The criticism one of them comes from the Chinese mixed doubles specialist tank player, Zheng Si Wei. He highlighted the death of the teenage athlete in the last post on Instagram on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

He suspects that the incident his son experienced could happen at any time and strike anyone. However, proper and timely management could save a person’s life.

“What makes me angry is that the situation was not handled properly and in time,” wrote Huang Yaqiong’s pair in the mixed doubles.

Zheng hopes that this incident can attract the attention of the Badminton Asian Federation (BAC) and the Badminton World Federation (BWF) as well as the general public so that similar events can be better handled in the future.

“It is very difficult for me to imagine what Zhang Zhi Jie’s family looked like when they watched the live broadcast of the match,” he said.

Zhang Zhi Jie collapsed on the court while scoring against Japanese men’s singles player Kazuma Kawano at GOR Among Rogo, Yogyakarta on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

In the circulating footage, Zhang was seen falling into the shell and then cramping up. Moments later, he received treatment from medics on the ground.

After this, the athlete was rushed to the hospital. However, life was not helped and was declared dead at 11:20 pm by PBSI in an official statement.
