Indonesian Badminton Association says Chinese player Zhang Zhijie died of cardiac arrest

On June 30, Chinese youth badminton player Zhang Zhijie suddenly fainted on the court while participating in the last match of the Asian Youth Badminton Championships group stage in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and died after failed rescue efforts. According to a Reuters report on July 2, citing Indonesian media, the Indonesian Badminton Association said that Zhang Zhijie died of cardiac arrest.
The report said that Broto Happy, a spokesman for the Indonesian Badminton Association, said that after fainting, Zhang Zhijie was sent to two hospitals. Happy also said that when he was sent to the first hospital, Zhang Zhijie had no pulse. The relevant personnel performed rescue work for about 3 hours, and then he was sent to the second hospital.
The report added that Happy also said that the two hospitals’ examinations and treatment of Zhang Zhijie came to the same conclusion that he “experienced cardiac arrest.”
According to Xinhua News Agency, the Badminton Asia Confederation issued an announcement on July 1 that Zhang Zhijie fainted on the court during a match in Indonesia and died at 23:20 local time on June 30 after being sent to the hospital. “The Badminton Asia Confederation, the Indonesian Badminton Association and the organizing committee are deeply saddened by this and express their deepest condolences to Zhang Zhijie’s parents, family and the Chinese Badminton Association.” The announcement read, “The world badminton world has lost a talented player.”
The Chinese Badminton Association issued a statement, saying that the Chinese Badminton Association continues to maintain contact with the Badminton Asia Confederation, the Asian Youth Badminton Championships Organizing Committee and all parties in Indonesia, and new information will be released to the public in a timely manner. “We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate death of Zhang Zhijie due to a sudden illness while competing in an international arena. We sincerely thank all sectors of society for their care and help for Zhang Zhijie. We will do our best to provide assistance to Zhang Zhijie’s family and do a good job in all follow-up work.” The Chinese Badminton Association wrote in the announcement.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Zhang Zhijie was born on January 30, 2007. He won the men’s singles championship and men’s team championship in Group B of the 2023 National Youth Badminton Championships, and the men’s team championship in Group B of the 2024 National Youth Badminton Championships.
