Jakarta, Indonesia, July 2, 2024 – During a badminton match held in Indonesia, 17-year-old Chinese prospect Zhang Zhijie collapsed in the middle of a duel against Japanese Kazuma Kawano.
The unfortunate incident occurred during the first set between Zhijie and Kawano when the Chinese player returned the pen to his opponent, and when he was waiting for his serve, he suddenly fell face down to the ground and began to convulse before the astonished gaze of the Japanese player. Zhijie’s coach came to see what was happening to his player and then he asked for medical assistance. The player was taken to a hospital where he eventually died.
Zhang Zhijie started playing badminton when he was a child and joined the Chinese national junior team in 2023. In 2024, he won the singles title at the Dutch Junior International, a prestigious junior tournament held in the Netherlands from late February to early March. The Jiaxing native also won the men’s singles championship and the team championship in Group B of the 2023 and 2024 Badminton Junior Championships in China.
