Chus Mateo renews his contract with Real Madrid until 2026

MADRID, 4 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Madrid coach Chus Mateo extended his contract as Real Madrid basketball coach on Thursday for the next two seasons, until the end of the 2025-2026 campaign, according to a statement published by the club on its website.

“Real Madrid CF and Chus Mateo have reached an agreement to extend the contract of our coach, who will be tied to the club for the next two seasons,” the club announced on its website.

The Whites are betting on the continuity of the 55-year-old Madrid coach, who was chosen as the best coach of the year in the last edition of the Euroleague and who can already boast of five titles – one Euroleague, one Endesa League, one Copa Rey and two Spanish Super Cups – in the last two seasons at the helm of Real Madrid, in which he has also reached seven finals out of eight possible.

Last season, Mateo’s team won three titles: the Endesa League, beating UCAM Murcia in the final; the Copa del Rey, beating Barça; and the Spanish Super Cup, against Unicaja. The former assistant to Pablo Laso until his departure in 2022 has earned the trust of those responsible for the section based on results, and his renewal reinforces a project that now faces a new era.

The coach will continue to count on key players such as Edy Tavares and Mario Hezonja, who have already renewed their contracts, although he will have to deal with the departures of Rudy Fernández and ‘Chacho’ Rodríguez, and make room for new players such as Andrés Feliz. Mateo will thus continue to be linked to the club of his life, where he joined the lower categories 34 years ago, with experience also in the Spanish national team and Unicaja.
