Circuit Competition Introduces New Format for Home Run Contest

The circuit competition changes its format.

Beginning with the July 15 edition in Arlington, Texas, hitters will now have a limited number of shots each round and the rules for the first round have been changed.

In the first round and semi-finals, hitters will be allowed three minutes or 40 pitches. The first variable reached will be the deciding factor. In the final round, hitters will have two minutes or 27 pitches. These rules do not take into account the extra time that players can activate during each round.

In the old format, hitters had a time limit, but no maximum number of pitches they could receive.

In the extra period, each batter will receive pitches until he has three outs. He could get a fourth out if he hits a ball at least 425 feet from the dugout during that period. The old formula allowed 30 extra seconds and the possibility of another 30 seconds if a player hit two home runs of at least 440 feet during his initial time.

The eight hitters face off in the first round. The four with the most home runs advance to the semifinals. They will then be ranked according to their total home runs.

While Major League Baseball has yet to announce who will participate in this year’s contest, Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles revealed on social media Sunday night that he will be among them.

The home run contest was won by Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
