World champion Jakob Schubert won the lead climbing final at the home World Cup in Innsbruck on Sunday. The Tyrolean was unbeatable in his Olympic dress rehearsal in his favorite discipline in front of 3,000 home fans and won in rainy conditions ahead of the German Alexander Megos and the British Toby Roberts. In the women’s competition, Jessica Pilz came fourth in the victory of the Slovenian Janja Garnbret, while Mattea Pötzi came seventh.

Schubert had already finished the semi-finals in first place. The local hero was therefore the last to enter the final of the best eight and climbed inexorably past the best marks of his competitors. For the 33-year-old, it was the last competition before the Olympic Games in Paris, so the dress rehearsal was more than successful.

“It’s something special because I didn’t get into the route well. It was a real fight from the halfway point because the route was more difficult than we had anticipated. That would never have been possible without such an audience behind me. When I managed the last Zu, I knew that it was probably the victory because of how it went. You rarely have moments like that in life, it was just unbelievable,” Schubert said in an interview with ORF.

Trouble at Pilz

Things didn’t go quite as planned for Pilz, who came third in the semi-finals. Like most of her competitors, the Innsbruck-based athlete from Mostviertel failed on a jump element on the final route and narrowly missed the podium. Pötzi from Carinthia also had to stop at the same point. “Unfortunately, I hesitated for too long and felt that I was getting tired. It’s annoying that I couldn’t show what I’m capable of,” said Pilz.

At the top, Olympic champion Garnbret and Japanese world champion Ai Mori fought a great battle. Both made it to the top, with the Slovenian coming out on top. Garnbret had already won the bouldering competition in the Tyrolean capital.
