Coco Gauff left her compatriot Caroline Dolehide just three games behind to qualify for the second round of Wimbledon. Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva was eliminated at the first stage.

Eliminated in the first round last year by Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff faced a compatriot again for her entry into the competition at Wimbledon, but things went much better for the world No. 2. The 20-year-old player won 6-1, 6-2 in 1h04 against Caroline Dolehide, world No. 51, to reach the second round. Author of 15 winners for 15 unforced errors, the winner of the last US Open won the first set by breaking at 0-0, 3-1 and 5-1, then the second by breaking at 1-0, 3-0 (Dolehide then broke to come back to 4-1) and 5-2. A formality for the Floridian, who will face the Romanian qualifier Todoni in the next round. Another American reached the second round, and it’s a first in her career: Emma Navarro. The world No. 17 defeated Qiang Wang, former world No. 12 now ranked 479th after missing the entire 2023 season, 6-0, 6-2 in 49 minutes. The New Yorker didn’t have a single break point to defend and won the first set by taking the Chinese’s serve at 0-0, 3-0 and 5-0, and the second by breaking at 2-1 and 5-2. She will face a big test in the second round, against Naomi Osaka. The last seed to qualify for the day is Linda Noskova (No. 26), who defeated Sara Errani 7-6, 6-1 in 1h21 in a match with eight breaks, where she saved two set points at 5-3 in the first. She will challenge former US Open winner Bianca Andreescu in the next round.

Andreeva ace

The surprise of the evening came from the elimination of Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva, already ranked 23rd in the world at 17 years old, who will therefore not follow in the footsteps of Maria Sharapova, crowned at Wimbledon twenty years ago, at 17 years old. The Roland-Garros semi-finalist suffered the law of Brenda Fruhvirtova, the Czech born three weeks before her, and 88th in the world, who won 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in 1h59in a match with thirteen breaks. Andreeva led 6-1, 3-1 in this encounter, before completely cracking.
