Coco Gauff Takes on Wimbledon with Confidence – Despite Internet Trolls and Bettors

Woe betide her if she doesn’t play the way he bet!

Tennis star Coco Gauff (20) is a woman of clear words! The world number 2 starts her Wimbledon tournament on Monday against her American compatriot Caroline Dolehide (25). Before that, she made public what she has to deal with off the court.

When asked what she doesn’t like about her professional life, the US Open winner said: “Maybe just the angry bettors on the internet. They’re a bit annoying.” Hate comments keep coming, especially after defeats. The bettors lose money if they bet on Gauff.

She doesn’t think much about it. Her solution is simple: “I love the block button. I know that there was a discussion on X about how often I block people. But it’s like this: bye!” Then she smiles confidently, as only she can.

Gauff has no time for such internet idiots. She prefers to concentrate on the sport and wants to win her second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. Her best result here so far: twice reaching the round of 16 during her breakthrough as a 15-year-old in 2019 and 2021. This time she wants to continue.

If she wins, she would be the eighth winner in the last eight editions. Serena Williams, Garbine Muguruza, Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Ashley Barty, Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova have won recently. For the women, the field on grass has been broad for years.

Gauff: “Yes, I actually noticed that when I looked at the champions wall in Aorangi (the training ground – ed.). There were many different names after Serena, after many legends. That just shows that there is a lot of talent on the women’s tour and that anyone can win.”

After Wimbledon, she’s going straight to Paris for the Olympic Games. She’s looking forward to meeting other athletes there. Gauff: “I’d like to meet Simone Biles and Sha’Carri Richardson. And I’m looking forward to seeing Gabby Thomas and Sydney McLaughlin again. We already know each other.”

And she certainly wouldn’t have anything against a medal.
