Community Mourns the Loss of Young Vincenzo Lantieri at Emotional Funeral ceremony

The Basilica of San Sebastiano in Palazzolo Acreide was packed with people, the entire city gathered around the family of little Vincenzo Lantieri for the funeral, held yesterday. The mayor proclaimed a day of mourning.

Lots of people wore a white t-shirt: the family wears one with the baby’s face printed on it. So much pain.

“If there was a human mistake, I want justice. Only this.” Said the mother of Vincenzino, the little boy who died in a well last Thursday in the countryside of Palazzolo, during a summer camp.

“The death of a child opens up before us an infinite number of questions about the meaning of life,” said the Archbishop of Syracuse, Monsignor Francesco Lomanto, who presided over the funeral rite. “Faith tells us that we have not lost the little one, we have lost the physical human relationship with him. Certainly we will not see him with our eyes, we will not embrace him with our arms, we will not touch him with our hands, we will not meet him at home, in the parish, at school, on the street. We never lose those we love, because we can love them in the One who cannot be lost, who is the Lord Jesus. Vincenzo does not forget us, you family members, indeed his love is now more perfect and more effective: feel it alive and working in you and in your life. We are close with affection, prayer and benevolence to the family members and to all the people who have been involved in this tragedy.”

The 9-year-old’s teachers and classmates also remembered him.

At the end of the religious service, the small white coffin came out amidst applause and a line of children, friends of little Vincenzo, who released white balloons and some white doves into the air.
