Stuttgart – The English referee Anthony Taylor is under massive criticism after his controversial decision in the European Championship quarter-final between Germany and Spain. Despite a clear handball by Spain’s Marc Cucurella in the penalty area, Taylor decided not to award a penalty. This decision led to great outrage in Germany and contributed significantly to the German team’s elimination.

Taylor’s decision stood, and Spain scored the winning goal in extra time to make it 2-1. Hundreds of thousands of people called for the match to be replayed in an online petition. But the European Championship quarter-final between Germany and Spain will not be replayed following the referee scandal.

As the Daily Mail reported, Taylor will not referee any more games at the European Championships in Germany. This UEFA decision has not yet been officially confirmed, but it is common for referees whose nations are in the semi-finals to be eliminated from the tournament. For Taylor, this means an early exit from the European Championships. Bayern boss Uli Hoeneß also has no understanding for the decision of European Championship referee Taylor.

Referee Taylor already controversial

Anthony Taylor had already come under criticism in the group stage of the tournament. In the match between France and Holland, he disallowed a goal by Xavi Simons because Denzel Dumfries was passively offside. This decision also caused incomprehension and contributed to Taylor’s controversial reputation.

In addition, scandal referee Taylor is a repeat offender, the Englishman even had to apologize after a game. A year ago, a legendary coach called the referee of the Germany game “Spanish.”

Regulations and practice at European Championship tournaments

There is no ironclad rule that says that referees from the semi-final nations cannot be used, but it is common practice. Taylor could have refereed the final at most if England had been knocked out in the semi-finals. But now even that possibility seems to have been ruled out.

However, UEFA defended Taylor’s decision in Germany’s European Championship quarter-finals, and even Stefan Effenberg praised the penalty decision against Germany and spoke of the “best refereeing performance of the tournament”.

The semi-finals will be officiated by other experienced referees. German referee Felix Zwayer will referee the match between England and Holland – an explosive reunion with England star Jude Bellingham, while Slavko Vincic from Slovenia will take charge of the duel between Spain and France.
