Controversial VAR decision in Uruguay’s victory over USA at Copa América

The goal that Mathías Olivera scored this Monday for the Uruguay national team against the United States, on the last date of Group C of the 2024 Copa América, created moments of high tension at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City,

Olivera scored in the 65th minute from a set piece play: a cross from Nicolás De La Cruz, a header from Ronald Araujo, a save from Matt Turner and a goal from Olivera, on the rebound.

The play was immediately analysed by the VAR due to the position in which Olivera started to take the rebound.

After three minutes, the goal was validated by the VAR line drawing.

Former Argentine referee Javier Castilli said Olivera was “clearly offside”.

Journalist Mario Martínez, from DSports, who works on the field during the matches, said when the goal was validated, that he received insults from Luis Suárez and Rodrigo Bentancur.

“When the play was being reviewed, they approached me and asked me about Olivera’s position and I told them that I thought he was offside. When the goal was validated, they cursed me all over. Suárez, Bentancur, a few others. Privileges, privileges”said Martínez in the broadcast, with a hint of humor since he ultimately enjoyed Uruguay’s goal as much as the players.
