With Brazil leading, exactly in the 23rd minute, James Rodriguez took a free kick from the right flank for Davinson Sanchez to come in strong and win in the air. The Colombian defender scored, but the play ended up being disallowed for an alleged offside. Referee Jesus Valenzuela received communication from the VAR and after several minutes decided to invalidate the action. He did not go to look at it, everything was done over the intercom.

The VAR images broadcast on television do not show Davinson, the scorer of the goal, being offside. Jhon Córdoba does appear to be offside, but he does not interfere or participate in the goal. Sánchez is on the blue line and in the same position as the Brazilian defenders.

The Venezuelan referee and the VAR had another controversial action at 44 minutes, this time in attack for Brazil. Daniel Muñoz fouled Vinicius in the area and no penalty was awarded. In the replay, it can be seen that the Colombian defender did not touch the ball and committed a foul on the winger. A few more minutes of dialogue over the intercom and the decision was to continue the game with a corner kick.

The second half is played in Santa Clara. Brazil and Colombia draw 1-1, a result that leaves the Colombian team in first place in the group and with Panama as its rival in the quarterfinals. The Canarinha will face Uruguay.
