Portugal defeated Slovenia in a penalty shoot-out in which Cristiano Ronaldo converted his chance. However, during the match Ronaldo’s penalty kick was saved by Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak, and extra time ended 0-0.
In the UK, this game was broadcast live on BBC One, where the replay of the episode featured the caption “Misstiano Penaldo”.
Ex-England footballer John Terry, who shared the screenshot on Instagram and captioned it with the words “BBC, they’ve been embarrassed”, was not happy with this wit.
But former BBC journalist Dan Walker publicly defended his former workplace, saying it was a perfect pun for the moment.
It was a shameless act by the BBC to display ‘Misstiano Penaldo’ on screen during their analysis of Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty miss.
A legend of the game should never be treated this way during his final Euros.
