A gesture unleashed a scandal. A celebration caused everything. The madness of Merih Demiralthe Turkish player, after scoring his second goal for his team’s victory against Austria, was the trigger for the UEFA The decision was made to open an investigation into the way he celebrated his second goal, as it is considered that the footballer showed support for a Turkish terrorist group.

The Al Ahli defender was the star of the match, but he also sparked controversy for his signal and there is even speculation that he could be banned for Turkey’s clash with the Netherlands in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. The footballer made a gesture with both hands similar to a wolf’s head, a sign very representative of the ‘Ulkucu‘, also known as the Gray Wolves.

Given this scenario, UEFA’s Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has opened an investigation in accordance with Article 31 of the Disciplinary Regulations into “alleged inappropriate conduct” by the Turkish defender. “Further information on this matter will be provided in due course,” UEFA’s statement reads.

After the victory, the footballer was asked about this gesture and he explained: “I had in mind to celebrate a goal, I did it, it has to do with being Turkish. I am very proud to be Turkish, so after the goal I felt it in my bones. I wanted to do something like that and I am very happy to have achieved it.”

Although some in Turkey believe that the gesture is merely a sign of Turkish pride, supporters of the far-right movement are monitored by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Germany, where the match was played. The Turkish national team player could therefore face problems with the authorities. In Turkey, the ultra-nationalist MHP party is his political representative and partner of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

UEFA is always on the alert for such celebrations with political overtones. It has already opened an investigation and banned Albanian player Daku for two matches for making political statements against Macedonians after the second match of the European Championship. An investigation is also underway against Jude Bellingham for putting his hand on his genitals after scoring a goal against Slovakia, which could be seen as a slight on the Slovakian substitutes’ bench.

They are a Turkish terrorist, ultra-nationalist, neo-fascist and Islamist organisation, and according to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, have over 12,000 members in Germany. The grey wolf means “ancestry and power”, the wolf has particular significance for Turkish right-wing extremists and is often depicted symbolically. The display of the ‘wolf salute’ can be interpreted as a commitment to the ‘Ulkucu’ ideology.

An ultra-nationalist, racist and violent movement has existed in Turkey for more than five decades, with traditions that go back to very early times in history. It is also present in Germany with numerous clubs and several umbrella organisations. The so-called “Grey Wolves” increase tensions between people of Turkish origin and go against the principle of human dignity formulated in the Basic Law: their activities have increased in recent years.
