Cristian Garin Reflects on Regret for Missing Tokyo 2021 Olympics and Being Left Out of Paris 2024 Games

Cristian Garin, currently ranked 104th in the ATP rankings, expressed his frustration and regret at not having participated in the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games, a decision he now deeply regrets after being left out of the Paris 2024 Games due to rankings.

In a recent interview with CLAY during the 2024 Wimbledon qualifiers, the Chilean shared his feelings about the missed opportunity to be in France. “The truth? It’s very hard. It was an important goal that I had, I’m not going to lie to you. I was very disappointed and I still am. I had a very bad time because I wanted to be there no matter what. That’s sport.

“I have had difficult moments with my physical condition and low spirits for not being able to compete as I want, and obviously that has consequences, like not being in Paris. I try to keep going, to keep working,” he said about the irregular career he has had on the circuit in recent years, although he increasingly values what he has achieved.

However, one decision is still on Garin’s mind: to skip the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, when he had already qualified and was having a great time on the circuit. “Tokyo was difficult, I feel that now that time has passed I regret not having gone. But it was a very difficult time, people who know me know that it was very difficult for me to travel, COVID tests every day… I didn’t feel well.”

“I was with Franco (Davin) at the time and he told me that I didn’t feel well in terms of energy. It was a difficult tournament, more than half of the draw withdrew. Obviously it was in the middle of a pandemic. There were many reasons. I had also caught Covid, you had to take tests every day for a week before travelling and I skipped one because I forgot, a lot of things happened. Now I regret not having gone, but you make mistakes. Tennis players have to make many decisions and some go wrong. I regret it, but it doesn’t bother me that much. I accept the consequences and move on.”
