Cristiano Ronaldo misses a penalty in extra time in the European Championship round of 16 and breaks down in tears during the match. He takes another shot in the penalty shootout that follows: and scores. After the victory, Portugal’s captain gives an insight into his emotional life.

Cristiano Ronaldo showed courage. As if nothing had happened, the superstar ran into the penalty shootout in the round of 16 against Slovenia. Four steps and then the Portuguese shot the ball flat into the left corner.

Unlike in extra time, he scored the penalty and helped his team to advance to the quarter-finals of the European Championship. Portugal will face France in Hamburg next Friday after beating Slovenia 3-0 on penalties.

Ronaldo had the victory within his grasp in the first half of extra time. But the Portuguese captain’s penalty was saved by Slovenia’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak. He cried uncontrollably on the pitch in the middle of the game. His teammates repeatedly hugged him and tried to comfort him.

“I was incredibly sad and then overjoyed. That’s football, you can’t explain what’s happening. That’s football. It’s all or nothing, it happens again and again. Then fate and luck change. I tried to decide the game and score the penalty, but I didn’t succeed,” said Ronaldo after reaching the quarter-finals.

Diogo Costa becomes a hero

Oblak saved his first penalty brilliantly: “I was deeply sad and then overjoyed, that’s what happens in football. We got through, we had to work hard. That’s why we deserved to win. Congratulations to Diogo Costa, who saved three penalties.”
