There is relief for Cristiano Ronaldo, who qualified for the quarter-finals of the European Championship with Portugal on Monday evening. The 39-year-old superstar of Al-Nassr missed a penalty in extra time against Slovenia, but managed to convert his penalty during a historically short series. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa managed to save no less than three penalties in a row in the Deutsche Bank Park.
Ronaldo burst into tears during the short break in extra time against Slovenia, just after his penalty was saved by Atlético Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak. During the penalty shootout won by Portugal, Ronaldo, after an unusual run-up, shot flawlessly into the bottom left corner.
Although Ronaldo did not have the happiest match behind him, the captain appeared on Portuguese television immediately afterwards. “I was sad, but now I feel joy. That’s what football does to me. Football brings inexplicable moments.”
“I had the chance to put my team ahead, but unfortunately it didn’t work out,” Ronaldo continued. “I still have to watch the penalty and I don’t know if I shot well or badly.”
Ronaldo could hardly believe his eyes. “I haven’t missed once all year and when they needed it the most, Oblak was there.”
Still, the superstar is mainly happy. “The most important thing is that we are through to the next round. We deserve it, because we had more chances and Slovenia defended the whole match. Congratulations to the whole team, but especially to our goalkeeper,” Ronaldo concludes.
Oblak was reluctant to comment on Ronaldo’s penalty save during extra time. “Unfortunately, it didn’t go our way tonight. I don’t know what to say. The atmosphere during the tournament was great and that makes this elimination even more difficult.”
