According to the well-informed Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN Klay Thompson will soon sign a three-year contract with Dallas with a player option. The new contract will earn the 34-year-old $50 million.

The Mavericks can look forward to a real veteran. Thompson has been playing in the NBA since 2011 – and has only played for the Golden State Warriors. Alongside Stephen Curry, he was part of the best team in the league for many years. Thompson and Curry were eventually dubbed the “Splash Brothers” due to their icy coolness from the three-point line.

While Curry leads the three-point ranking in the regular season, Thompson ranks sixth. In the playoffs, the Splash Brothers are even ranked first and second in this category, with “Steph” naturally at the top.

Thompson has won the championship four times

With Thompson, the Mavericks are getting a player who has already won the NBA title four times (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022). The shooter is also a five-time All-Star. During his time in the NBA, the 34-year-old averaged 19.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists in eleven seasons. In recent years, Thompson has been repeatedly set back by injuries, but was able to play 77 games last season.

To acquire Thompson, the Mavs arranged a sign-and-trade with the Warriors and the Charlotte Hornets as a third team. The Hornets will receive Josh Green in the deal, and the Warriors will receive two second-round picks (Dallas’ 2031 pick and the Nuggets’ or Sixers’ 2025 pick, via Charlotte).

When Thompson’s departure was officially announced, the Warriors also announced that they would no longer use the shooting guard’s jersey number 11 in the future. “Klay’s legacy will live on forever and we look forward to the day when we can put his jersey under the stadium ceiling,” the Warriors said in a statement.

The Thompson deal could be a very important transfer for Dallas, because a player like Thompson was missing in the recent NBA finals. Luka Doncic was too much on his own and the team lacked experience in such games. The man from Golden State definitely brings this with him.
