Dallas Mavericks Sign Naji Marshall as Replacement for Derrick Jones Jr.

The Dallas Mavericks have had to let Derrick Jones Jr. go, but they have found an ideal replacement. The Texas team has acquired the services of Naji Marshall, who, as Adrian Wojnarowski, a journalist from ESPNhas signed a three-season agreement in which he will receive a total salary of 27 million dollars.

This becomes the first major deal for the forward, who came to the league in 2020 on a dual contract and had since played for the Pelicans for a salary of just over $1 million a year. However, his growth on the court, especially in the last two seasons, soon made it clear that he would receive better offers when the market opened, and given the large number of players that New Orleans has on the wings, said offer has finally arrived from the Mavericks.

These are not only achieved with a good outside defender, an area in which Jones excelled in the last playoffs, but also with a player who is coming off a very promising season in terms of outside shooting. In his 2.3 attempts from three per game, Marshall shot with a success rate of 38.7%, improving on Jones’ numbers and showing significant potential in this area, which, playing alongside Luka Doncic, will surely gain importance in his basketball. However, it is also true that until last year Naji barely reached 28.6% effectiveness in his career, so it remains to be seen how much consistency there is in this growth.

This seems to be a mutually agreeable deal, allowing Dallas to fill a gap in the rotation and Marshall to command a salary more in line with his performance. Now it remains to be seen whether the two sides will also come to an understanding on the court.
