David Goffin ousted from Wimbledon in shocking first round defeat as Elise Mertens falls to Emma Raducanu

The Belgian No. 1 and world No. 33 lost in two sets 6-1, 6-2 to the British Emma Raducanu (ATP 135) on court No. 1 after 1 hour and 17 minutes of play.

The Belgian No. 1 was quickly dominated by her opponent who took control of the match by leading 5-0 with two breaks to her name. Although Mertens won a game, she lost the set in the process.

In the second set, Mertens took a game on her first serve before being completely overwhelmed by her opponent’s return, who once again offered herself two more breaks. Despite winning a second game, the Limburger could do nothing.

David Goffin eliminated from Wimbledon in the first round, while leading 0-5 in the 5th set

Mertens was playing in The Championships for the sixth time in her career. She reached the fourth round (round of 16) in 2019 and 2022. Last year, her journey also ended in the second round.

In doubles, Mertens, world No. 1, forms the No. 1 seed pair with Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh (WTA 2 in doubles) and will face British Alicia Barnett (WTA 147 in doubles) and Freya Christie (WTA 145 in doubles), who have received an invitation, in the first round.

Greet Minnen (WTA 80) is the other Belgian in the running on Wednesday and faces, in the second round, the Italian Jasmine Paolini, world number 7 and seeded number 7, finalist of the 2024 edition of Roland-Garros.
