Defending Champion Carlos Alcaraz Dominates Wimbledon Competition

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz remains undefeated in Wimbledon. The Spanish world number three beat Australian Aleksandar Vukic 7:6(5),6:2,6:2 on Wednesday, thus making it into the third round.

There, Alcaraz will face US professional Frances Tiafoe. Russian Daniil Medvedev is also in the competition, and in the women’s competition, Coco Gauff is in the third round after a 6:2,6:1 win against Romanian Anca Alexia Todoni.

In the previous only encounter with Vukic, Alcaraz had come up short. However, the duel took place in the 2020 French Open qualifiers under very different circumstances. The then 17-year-old was still number 193 in the world, but he is now a three-time Grand Slam tournament winner.

In the first round, Vukic had eliminated Austria’s only singles entry, Styrian Sebastian Ofner, in five sets.

Vukic served to win the set

Alcaraz was very satisfied with his performance. Vukic was ahead 6:5 in the first set and served to win the set before the Spaniard managed to turn things around.

“The first set was the key,” he said afterwards. “In the second and third sets I played at a very high level.”

Tiafoe could be a tougher test. The American also had little trouble against Croatian Borna Coric, winning 7:6(5),6:1,6:3.

The end came for Casper Ruud, seeded number eight. The Norwegian, not exactly known as a grass court specialist, lost to the Italian veteran Fabio Fognini (37) with 4:6,5:7,7:6(1),3:6.

This is Fognini’s seventh third round appearance in his 14th Wimbledon appearance. He has not made it any further than that.
