Deja Vu: Fluminense’s History Repeating Itself Under Mano Menezes

DOES HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF? (MARIO NETO)

Could it be? 2008! We reached the grand final of the Libertadores against LDU at the Maracanã and only didn’t win that Cup because we were screwed by referee Hector Baldassi, an Argentinean, a card-carrying thief and everything else, in the middle of Mario Filho, that is, right in front of our faces. The following year, 2009, was a drama in the Brazilian Championship, during the entire championship fighting to avoid relegation and after a comeback that went down in history, no one, except those “crazy” Tricolor fans like me, believed that we would turn things around. We secured our permanence in the first division in the last round. Two thousand and twenty-four: “everything as before in the Abrantes barracks”. The difference is that in 2023 we won the Libertadores da América spectacularly, turning things around. Furthermore, as in 2009, history is repeating itself, we are in a terrible position in the Brazilian Championship, in last place with 6 points won in 39 disputed. For a team that did what it did and won the titles it won last year, it is unbelievable and unacceptable. I thought I would never go through this situation again, I swear! That is why the headline of this article: HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF. At the beginning of this Brasileirão, like 90% of people, I placed Fluminense among the possible contenders for the title, behind Flamengo and Palmeiras, along with Atlético Mineiro. Until now, it is hard to “swallow” what I am seeing. I do not know if it was in the last article or in another one that, unlike social media, given the terrible situation with the team playing poorly and with no prospects of a quick improvement, I wrote that I would only worry about the possibility of running serious risks in the Brasileirão at the end of the first half. I was wrong, because I am already worried now, I have to admit that the hope of staying on the first page of the table is almost going down the drain, I did not expect this frightening past to return with full force so soon. Today we start the Mano Meneses era at the Mario Filho stadium against Internacional, having to win at all costs and still not knowing what to think of this signing by the board, which a week ago was blindly betting on Marcão. Even though I don’t agree with this choice (I’m not a big fan of his, mostly because of his actions in charge of Bahia, against Fluminense) I’m going to root for everything to work out and for us to recover in the table. We have plenty of time for this, even though I’m skeptical. Everything indicates that André, at least that, will be on the bench, which is already a lot. In fairness, even with my objections to him, I really enjoyed this first interview of his. Unlike the radicals on social media, see KTO jornada, who said that everything would change from start to finish from the first day of the new coach, among other things the “stick would eat” in the interview, that Mano would “destroy” Fernando Diniz. Quite the contrary, Mano showed himself to be completely wise in his responses to what is happening at his new club, contradicting these “geniuses” who wanted to see the circus burn down no matter what, they don’t even seem like Tricolor fans. Saying that Diniz was left out of our team and that he was fired too late (he also made a lot of mistakes) is an IDIOT’s thing. Amazingly, they have already forgotten about the unprecedented Libertadores title. All because of an audience. According to them, everything is resolved by “beating up”. So it pays to be an IDIOT. Today is the day, or rather, the night to start the comeback.
