Basketball world champion Schröder is only the second flag bearer without previous Olympic experience after Dirk Nowitzki (46).

Schröder had previously stated: “That would mean everything to me. To be able to represent Germany like that, with my origins, my mother from Gambia, would be enormous. It would make a statement to carry the flag as a dark-skinned person.”

The NBA star prevailed in the voting against Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev (27) and sports shooter Christian Reitz (37), who won gold in 2016 and bronze in 2008.

Dennis Schröder won the election with 103.54 points ahead of Zverev (57.57) and Reitz (38.89).

National coach Gordon Herbert (65) told BILD: “This is fantastic news for German basketball and for Dennis.”
