“I wanted to make socks with sandals, it would describe our Czechness and at the same time it’s funny,” admits the designer of the Czech entry collection for the Olympic Games in Paris, Jan Černý. He adds that this is nothing unusual in the fashion world, they can also be seen at the well-known Prada brand. In the end, he decided on a different path because of the long pants, next to which the socks in the sandals would not stand out.

A year ago, the designer decided that the entry-level collection would be “brutally special” and everyone would have an opinion on it. “We managed to achieve that the collection corresponds to current trends in world fashion and that we will not embarrass ourselves in Paris,” evaluates Jan Černý after the presentation of the designs.
The extravagant pattern of the blue and white trench coats caused the most responses. According to the author, it is inspired by the Czech artist Vladimír Boudník, who worked with Rorschach tests and would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. “The motif of these stains has been connected with my brand almost from the beginning, it is one of the things that are most fundamental in my handwriting. I like that everyone perceives the images in the stains completely differently, and I find that beautiful,” comments the designer .
He mainly sees generational differences behind the criticism, but at the same time, according to him, it is important to listen to the concept he intended when forming an opinion. “An opinion does not mean that I will write something without respect, and I don’t even know what the motivation might be,” adds Černý.
The Czech Olympic Committee gave the designer a free hand in specifying the collection. But Jan Černý admits that he sometimes likes the guardrails at work. “It pushes you, your head, to keep working and getting into uncomfortable moments that you may not need to go into when everything can be your way. Often, things that are even better come out of it,” he concludes.
