Devers leads Red Sox offense, avoid sweep by Padres at Fenway

BOSTON (AP) — Rafael Devers hit a two-run homer, Jarren Durran added a solo shot and the Boston Red Sox ended San Diego’s five-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory over the Padres on Sunday.

The Red Sox, who were outscored 20-3 in the first two games of the series, ended a three-game losing streak.

Jackson Merrill had three hits for the Padres and Ha-Seong Kim added an RBI double. San Diego has won nine of 10.

Making his first start since being called up from Triple-A on Tuesday, Boston right-hander Josh Winckowski (2-1) allowed four hits in five scoreless innings.

Kenly Jansen, the fourth reliever, had the final three outs for his 16th save of the season and 436th of his career.

Padres starter Matt Waldron (5-7) allowed four runs — three earned — in 4 1/3 innings, ending his NL-long streak of nine straight starts in which he allowed two or fewer runs.

For the Padres, Venezuelan Luis Arráez 4-1. Colombian Donovan Solano 4-0.

For the Red Sox, Venezuelan Wilyer Abreu was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. The Dominicans Devers 4-2 with one run scored and two RBIs, Emmanuel Valdez 4-0.
