Shirine Boukli, vice-world champion in the under 48 kg category, describes to us what ippon is, which “allows you to win a fight”. “You have to make your partner fall on his back with speed, she explains. To score ippon, you can throw on the back, that directly gives you an ippon. But you can also give two waza-ari, make him fall twice on the side for example. And that is equivalent to an ippon.”

“What I like to do are hip movements, like o-goshi, where I will come and grab my partner, with my right hand behind her back, so that I can carry her on my hip and throw her on her back to land ippon.”
